Mateias Mausoleum
Mateias Museum is an imposing monument honoring the memory of Romanian heroes who died in World War I. Massive staircases climb towards the tower that dominates the terrace. An ossuary and a chapel are to be found here and front scenes dioramas are placed inside the museum.
Built during 1928-1935 by developer De Nicolo after the blueprints of architect Dumitru Ionescu Berechet, the massive mausoleum is mainly made of Albesti limestone and has
two parts: the first is horizontal and it hosts the ossuary; marble plaques with the names of soldiers who died in battles are set up on its walls; the second is vertical and is shaped like a tower towards which a spiral stair is climbing.
The remains of more than 2300 Romanian militaries rest in the 31 crypts herein.
